about

Introduction:

Flappers. Prohibition. Crime, scandal, rebellion. Innovation. The
Charleston, wealth, and Jay Gatsby. All of these are hallmarks of the fascinating era of the 1920s. Equally interesting is the music of the era: a time when all of the changes in political and social norms were reflected in the popular music of the time: jazz. From the red-light district in New Orleans to the dance halls of Chicago and the lush high society parties in New York, one thing is clear: jazz was all the rage. Bands grew from small combos to a standard 11-piece orchestra which arranger Bill Challis recalled was “out of necessity to fill those big and busy dance halls.” Jazz music started to be notated and arranged for the larger ensembles, forming its own sub-genre known as Hot Dance or Hot Jazz. Thousands of such orchestras operated on a local and national circuit, finding steady work in venues all across the country.

Our hope is to provide the listener with a cross-section of that music. The socio-political aspects of the Roaring 20’s are imbedded in musical and lyrical forms. And most importantly, the music is great for dancing! So roll up your rug, turn up your hi-fi stereo, and relax after a long day at work, because with Dan Gabel’s High Society Orchestra, our Business is in the Key of F!
